IDF Family Conference Day- East Lansing, MI

Lansing, MI, birthplace of NBA superstar Irving “Magic” Johnson and home to Top Ten Conference school Michigan State University, is now legendary for another reason as IDF hosted a family conference day in East Lansing on April 30, 2011. Over 60 people attended the meeting at the East Lansing Marriot at University Place. While the adults listened to local immunologist present sessions the youth participated in their own program.  Activities for the youth included a great scavenger hunt, lesson on hand washing, and plenty of games.

Volunteers conducted a raffle and raised over $100 for IDF!

The adult meeting included the following speakers and topics:

Newborn Screening for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disease
Elizabeth Secord, MD, Children’s Hospital of Michigan

Medical Advocacy for Persons with Primary Immunodeficiency Disease
Martin E. Hurwitz, MD, Allergy & Immunology Associates of Ann Arbor, P.C.

Ask the Medical Expert
Lawrence Hennessey, MD, Okemos Allergy Center, PC
Martin E. Hurwitz, MD, Allergy & Immunology Associates of Ann Arbor, P.C.
Carl B. Lauter, MD, William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak
Elizabeth Secord, MD, Children’s Hospital of Michigan

Healthcare Reform
Frank Quintieri – Baxter Healthcare

Family Dynamics of Chronic Illness
Donna Marie Meszaros, PhD, Abaris and Apex Behavioral Health Clinics, IDF Volunteer
Rebecca Wang, MA, LLPC – Private Practice Therapist, IDF Volunteer

It was a great opportunity to  learn about the PIDD Community and disease management. There were plenty of questions for the ‘ask the medical expert’ session. Also, several people experienced their first exposure to IDF and patient education.  One attendee described his day simply as, “Awesome!”

This meeting would not have been possible without the work of our amazing volunteers whose passion is a driving force in the PIDD community.  Many thanks go to Becky Wang, Kathi Beiswenger, Donna Marie Meszaros, Katherine Gaboury, Julie Fetch, and Denice Muccioli for making the meeting such a huge success!

Thank you also to IDF Core Service Sponsors who make these meetings possible: Baxter Healthcare, Biotest Pharmaceuticals, CSL Behring, Grifols, IgG America/ASD Healthcare/US Bioservices, Octapharma, Talecris Biotherapeutics and Sustaining Contributor, Walgreens-IG Therapy Program
