Staten Island hosted its annual Back to the Beach celebration June 18 and 19 at the Midland beach. Thirty thousand people showed up to ride carnival rides, listen to music, play games and sample food from vendors at the South Beach Boardwalk.
Miss New York State was not the only lovely lady to attend the event. IDF New York volunteer, Joanna Tierno set up an informational table with IDF literature, brochures, and stress ball germs at the community event. Joanna talked to about 200 participants, who stopped by her booth, about the Immune Deficiency Foundation and primary immunodeficiency diseases.
This is a great example of using existing community events as a springboard to talk to people about primary immunodeficiency diseases and to advocate for the whole PIDD community! IDF is so lucky to have active volunteers like Joanna spreading the Zebra message.
