The last day of open enrollment for the Health Care Exchange Marketplace is December 15, 2018 for a January 1, 2019 start date. Although the individual mandate that instituted a fee for not having qualifying health insurance will no longer be in place in 2019, insurance coverage is vital for the PI community. The IDF Patient Insurance Center can provide you with information and resources to help you understand health insurance plans and make the best possible choice for coverage.
While exploring options for health insurance coverage for the upcoming year, please be aware that, despite what their name may imply, short-term, limited-duration insurance plans have been extended to cover policies that last just short of one year and can now be renewed up 36 months. What is important to know about these plans is that they do not have to comply with the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This means they do not have to cover pre-existing conditions, provide essential health benefits, or include adequate provider networks. While some states have prohibited these plans, many still offer them.
Please be sure to thoroughly research any health insurance plan before enrolling to ensure it includes the patient protections vital to the PI community. Should you have any questions during that process, please contact IDF: 800-296-4433 or www.primaryimmune.org/ask-idf.
