Video focuses on navigating hospital stay

What are some questions you should ask when considering a bone marrow transplant (BMT) for your baby with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID)? A new video posted to the SCID Compass website provides parents with a brief overview of topics to explore when researching transplant centers.

Created by SCID Compass partner Genetic Alliance Expecting Health, the 2-minute animated video, entitled “Navigating the Hospital Stay,” prompts parents to inquire about the following:

• How many cases of SCID has your hospital treated with BMT?
• How many years has the hospital used BMT to treat children with SCID?
• How many transplant doctors are on staff?
• Which doctors or group of doctors will be in charge of my child’s care?
• What can we do to prepare for my child’s transplant and stay in the hospital?
• What isolation precautions are required before, during, and after transplant?
• Are we allowed to have visitors?

The video also discusses the importance of keeping a baby in isolation during the transplant process, how appropriate donors are identified, and how the stem cells are administered on transplant day.
