Donor spotlight: Nupur Murthy

July 21, 2022

When IDF community member Nupur Murthy first received a diagnosis of Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), she was taken aback and described the earth-shattering moment “as if the ground was snatched from beneath my feet.”

Then, when she was able to process the diagnosis and undergo treatment, she decided that moving forward, she would use her experience and journey with PI to help others in similar situations.

“I wondered how many people were not as lucky as I am. I knew that I needed to give back to the community- the community in which I understood what it meant to be in constant mental and physical turmoil of living in fear and pain.”

Then, as the next step in her selfless mission, Nupur, along with her sister, decided to research organizations that help those with immune deficiencies, which is when she came across IDF and the Walk for PI.

Nupur with her family, including her sister, who helped her search for ways to get involved.

On her decision to become a team captain, she said, “I felt it was the perfect opportunity to tell my story to the world and encourage people to help contribute to this cause.”

After discovering this great way to give back and fundraise for IDF, she started things off by “first creating my team: Mission Murthy. I shared my story and fundraising link through email, my social media audience on Instagram and Facebook, as well as with my parents’ wide network of friends, family, and colleagues. From then on, I continued to receive an immense amount of support from so many people. It was so heartwarming to see how many people cared.”

When it comes to her inspiring reasons for supporting IDF, this includes furthering the research of PI, helping IDF grow its reach, creating awareness, providing resources for unprivileged members of the community, and the fact that Nupur understands the journey of PI all too well. “I can completely empathize with them. I understand the plight of the patients and the families and giving them the reassurance and strength to make it through something that is very close to my heart.”

If you are someone who is looking to get started with raising funds for those with PI, Nupur encourages you first to “give yourself a pat on the back. It is not very often that people come forward and help the world. We all live in our own busy lives, consumed by the demands of society, work, family, and friends, but taking a second to sit back and look at the bigger picture is something rare.”

She says, “oftentimes, people want to donate or learn more about ways to serve the community, but they are not sure where to start. You can be their start.”
