Major improvements have transformed how healthcare providers collect and use plasma, the clear yellowish part of blood that contains essential enzymes and proteins. These improvements allow more plasma to be collected from each donor, more medicine to be produced from each donation, and shorter donation times.
Fresenius Kabi developed the Adaptive Nomogram, which adjusts the amount of plasma collected based on each donor's weight and height. Before this, collection centers used simpler methods that didn't account for a person's unique body measurements. The system personalizes the donation amount, collecting the maximum safe amount of plasma while keeping donors safe and comfortable.. For example, a taller, heavier donor can safely give more plasma than a smaller donor. The Adaptive Nomogram calculates the exact right amount for each person, allowing centers to collect up to 15% more plasma from eligible donors.
Donating plasma typically takes one to two hours, which can discourage regular donations. CSL Plasma created the Rika Plasma Donation System, which uses advanced flow technology to process blood faster. It also features improved separation filters that work more quickly, and has a streamlined setup that reduces preparation time. The system cuts average donation time by up to 30%, meaning a donation that once took 90 minutes might now take only 60 minutes. When donors spend less time in the chair, donation centers can help more people each day, and donors are more likely to return regularly.
ADMA Biologics developed a new plasma yield enhancement production process that extracts more useful proteins from each plasma donation. In the past, the harsh conditions of manufacturing, including heating and adding solvents for viral inactivation, stressed and altered protein structures, damaging some proteins, especially temperature-sensitive ones. ADMA's new method captures more of these proteins, increasing yield by about 20%. This means companies can make more medicine for patients from the same amount of donated plasma.
These advancements in collection and processing have arrived at an opportune time, as researchers continue to discover innovative ways to use plasma therapies. The increased efficiency in plasma collection means more patients can access these emerging treatments.
Plasma therapies are entering an exciting era of innovation as well, with new applications emerging across multiple medical fields.
Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) shows promise in helping individuals with autoimmune psychosis, a type of autoimmune encephalitis. Autoimmune encephalitis is inflammation in the brain caused by a person's immune system attacking their own healthy tissue. Symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, fear, paranoia, anxiety, and difficulty sleeping. During TPE, healthcare providers remove blood from a patient's vein and separate the plasma through plasmapheresis. They replace the patient's plasma with healthy, donated plasma and return it with the patient's other blood components into a vein in the other arm. TPE for autoimmune encephalitis works by removing the antibodies that are attacking the person's brain and cuasing their symptoms.
As healthcare professionals deepen their understanding of plasma components' therapeutic potential, more applications will emerge, solidifying plasma therapies as a cornerstone of 21st-century medicine and improving treatment approaches for countless patients. This is why the advancements in donation collection processes is vital to meet the ever growing demand for plasma therapies.
